Simple Soundproofing Solutions to Complex Problems

Updated: May 2, 2023

“Physics is really nothing more than a search for ultimate simplicity” Bill Bryson from A Short History of Nearly Everything

Often the simplest design leads to the most elegant solution. I believe I’ve accomplished that simple elegance with HushFrame Raft connectors

During the invention and prototyping process, I started with more complicated metal devices, then iterated and iterated to simplify, simplify, simplify. The design culminated in a small wooden device that generates its core strength from dovetailing—an ancient and simple technique. As noted by Wikipedia, “the dovetail joint is noted for its resistance to being pulled apart (tensile strength). A series of ‘pins’ cut to extend from the end of one board interlock with a series of ‘tails’ cut into the end of another board. The pins and tails have a trapezoidal shape.” I have always been impressed by the art and culture of ancient Egyptians and it turns out that they made extensive use of dovetailing and this technique has never gone out of use—a happy through-line to the present day!

My simple design leveraging a historically proven technique creates a strong device that holds up in buildings.

HushFrame’s noise reduction & simplicity goes beyond its design to its application in building structures. Many soundproofing solutions require the installation of floating floors and a resilient pad over Gypcrete to achieve fire rating and sound isolation. By contrast, HushFrame achieves effective fire and sound ratings with a simple installation of plywood subfloor with no restriction on the finish floor—simplifying the construction process and providing soundproofing options and flexibility.

Installation of HushFrame Raft connectors is also simple: the noise reducing devices attach to the sides of assembly members (studs or joists) in ceilings, floors, walls with screws or nails—making installation easy.

Most importantly, HushFrame is simple in the way that it defeats noise transmission. The HushFrame raft connectors decouple sound vibrations from the building assembly and absorb them in silicone cores. They silence the noise simply and effectively—an elegant soundproofing solution for the complex problem of sound transmission in buildings.

Simple design. Simple application and installation. Superior results.
